Hey, everybody!

So, I got a tablet a while back, and I've been meaning to start doing art again. As I've mentioned in another topic, I plan to develop a game soon, so I would like to get my artistic skill to a point where I can design my own illustrations. Right now, I'm very far from where I need to be. I'm hoping that this topic will show my gradual improvement as I study form and color and improve my techniques. I'm also going to pick apart what I did right and what I did wrong. Believe it or not, I have a pretty good artistic sense. I just have a hard time conveying my mental image to a canvas.

To begin with, I drew a full-body illustration of one of my characters from The Black Dragon Chronicles. Everybody, meet Liowen.

Before I analyze this masterpiece, I want to mention that I didn't spend as much time on this one as I normally would have. This still took me quite a few hours to complete because I'm a slow artist, but I promised myself ahead of time that I wouldn't go crazy. Because of that, there are numerous mistakes, particularly with the line art, that I noticed later but decided not to fix for the sake of getting the illustration done.

Now for my personal critique. I'm quite proud of the anatomy in this one, with the exception of the hands (which are always a bitch) and the head. He looks like a human being with no major defects. I also don't think the hair turned out all that badly, although there's definitely room for improvement there. I was especially fond of the technique I used for the facial hair.

Things I'm not quite so proud of include the shading, his facial expression, and the shakiness of the line art in some areas. The shading is the worst offense. I know it's bad, and I really have no excuse for it. This will probably be one of my first areas of study as I try to improve. Part of the problem with the facial expression was that I was using too small of a canvas, so there was just not much room for detail. Either way, this is something I'll definitely have to work on. The shakiness of the line art is something that I'll conquer with time as I get used to using my new tablet. Considering that I haven't done digital art in at least four or five years, I really don't think it's something to worry about.

Overall, I think I'm at a good starting point. The character looks the way I imagined him in my head for the most part. My action plan going forward is to concentrate on small areas to improve on, such as drawing eyes, drawing hands, shading, and continuing to practice with human and animal models. Once I feel I have a good grasp of the basics, I'll try more elaborate drawings again.

I'll also have to work on backgrounds at some point. Backgrounds are hard as hell to do...
Reason for edit: Had to update my drawing. I forgot the scar, which is kind of a major part of his character design...

I'm tempted to make a joke at Paige's expense but I just woke up from a nap and my brain hasn't quite fully rebooted yet. laugh2.gif

All things considered that's pretty damn good for a first in fuck knows how many years. Definitely better than anything I'd scribble right now.

The thing about the shading though... as I told you earlier it also depends on the style you're going for.

Here's a screenshot of Killer7, you can see a very dynamic shading style because they were going for a noir feel.

That's a really cool style.

Yeah, I'm going to experiment with a few different techniques when I start practicing. I'll probably try that one out too.

I kinda wanna say something snarky/sassy about how this looks terrible but this early in the morning I'm afraid I might botch it up and make it sound sincere. So let's not and say I did. *snarky comment about quality of work*

This actually looks pretty good. Definitely webcomic quality already and it's only going to go up from here (given that you stick with it and invest time and effort).

This sort of makes me want to do artsy fartsy again myself... >_>

You should. We'll be mediocre art buddies together. laugh2.gif

Thanks for the compliment, though. Funny that you mentioned web comics because I've been considering starting one for a long time, although I don't think I could commit to updating regularly.

I feel like all of us could eventually start a mediocre art/game studio together.

Hey, guys! I actually did artwork! That means it's time for a self-review!

My first piece of artwork is an animated gif that I created in about an hour.

Here we have Pumpkin-chan. I'm honestly really happy with how she turned out. The shading on the body of the pumpkin looks pretty good in my opinion, and I like the simplistic black eyes. I feel that the blinking animation turned out smoothly, although the eyelids themselves could use some more definition since they're just a flat orange color. Part of the reason for this was because I didn't want to spend too much time on it and lose track of the million other things going on in my life, so I resolved to make a functional blinking animation and then call it a day.

Second piece of artwork!

Attached Image

This one turned out okay. It could have been better, but then again, I could have spent more time on it. Once more, I didn't want to devote too much of my time to this, since I have a tendency to lose myself in the pursuit of perfectionism. I was decently satisfied with my line art, so I moved onto coloring. After I was done coloring, I was satisfied with the aesthetic. It has a bit of a chaotic look to it, but J10 himself is a very chaotic person so it kind of works. laugh2.gif

To be honest, it kind of reminds me of the vivid colors you'd see in Mexican artwork. You know, like Cinco de Mayo stuff. I dig it.

I do have some nitpicks, but most of them consist of "the line art is sloppy and there's some color bleeding". These were things I could have improved on. I'm really satisfied with how the witch's face turned out, and also with the werewolf's face. These illustrations reflect the type of art style you should expect to see in my webcomic should I ever get around to working on it.

Another nitpick I have is the cursive Angel Spire off to the left of the banner. It's supposed to be somewhat of an afterthought, but I think I made it TOO much of an afterthought. Perhaps I should have used white lettering instead of black...

I also think that the bright purple color is kind of garish to look at in hindsight, but oh well. What's done is done.

I did learn a very important lesson while making this banner, however. Yesterday, I drafted my first version of it. I made the foolish mistake of using thicker lines for the outlines of my characters, and thin lines for the fine details. I cannot stress how TERRIBLE this looked. Seriously, regardless of what you think of my new banner, the old banner was an EYESORE in comparison. I scrapped the whole thing. It's still stored on my hard drive in case I ever want to go back and cringe remind myself of what I should never do.

You did fine bebs. The important thing is that your OCD is satisfied with it enough to show it publicly. Big girl steps! wub1.gif

There we go, and this is why I don't do things anymore. -_-;

Now that you mention it the banner does have a Mexican/Mayan feel to it.
